The “Invisible Load” Moms Carry—and How It Affects the Nervous System

When your brain is constantly tracking, anticipating, and managing, your nervous system stays in a low-level stress response.

There’s a kind of exhaustion that sleep doesn’t fix.

It’s the kind that comes from holding everything in your head: all the appointments, emotions, schedules, meals, worries, and everyone else’s needs.

I remember standing in the kitchen one morning, after everyone had already packed themselves in the car, realizing I had already made dozens of decisions before 8 a.m but yet had so many more things to do to get myself out the door. And yet, no one could see why I felt so overwhelmed. That’s the invisible load.

How the Invisible Load Impacts the Nervous System

When your brain is constantly tracking, anticipating, and managing, your nervous system stays in a low-level stress response.

Over time, this can lead to:
* Chronic tension in the body
* Difficulty resting, even when things are quiet
* Emotional shutdown or overwhelm
* Pelvic pain, headaches, or digestive issues

This isn’t because you’re doing the mom-thing “wrong.”
It’s because your nervous system hasn’t had enough support.

Gentle Ways to Lighten the Load

Supporting your nervous system doesn’t require doing less caring or more breathing. It means sharing the load internally and celebrating the little moments you carried it well. and Ideally, asking for more support when it's around.

Start with:
* Naming what you’re holding (even silently)
* Creating small moments of pause
* Letting your body settle before problem-solving
* Asking for more help when you can

In my Stress Reset Workshop for Moms, we focus on practical, body-based tools that fit into real life, not perfect routines.

You don’t need to carry this alone.
Your nervous system deserves care, too.
