As a mom of two wild boys, juggling work, errands, managing a household, and everything in between, I’ve learned that stress doesn’t just live in your head, it sets up shop in your body. One of the most powerful tools for managing stress and tension, especially in the pelvic floor and fascia, is the vagus nerve. Understanding how it works has completely changed the way I approach stress relief as a busy mom. It's less about stress management, and more about better nervous system regulation through stimulating this vagus nerve.
What the Vagus Nerve Does
The vagus nerve is like electrical wiring connecting your brain to your heart, lungs, digestive system, and even your pelvic floor. When life gets crazy stressors can trigger “fight or flight,” causing muscles to tighten, fascia to stiffen, and your pelvic floor to hold unnecessary tension. The vagus nerve helps to combat these responses to stress.
Signs Your Vagus Nerve Could Use a Reset
Tightness in the neck, hips, low back, or pelvic floor
Shallow breathing or chest/shoulder tension
Feeling “wired” even when there’s no immediate stress
Difficulty relaxing even after the kids go to bed
Practical Stress-Relief Tools That Work
Even as a busy mom, you can stimulate your vagus nerve and release pelvic floor tension:
1. Diaphragmatic Breathing: Slow deep breaths, expanding your rib cage in all direction, help to tell your body it’s safe and the movement of the diaphragm helps to release muscular tension, especially in the pelvic floor.
2. Gentle Movement: Walking, stretching, or gentle massage after chasing the kids helps your body unwind.
3. Micro-Mindful Pauses: A quick 1–2 minute check-in before responding to emails or stopping sibling fights helps your nervous system reset.
I used to rely on caffeine and “powering through” until I realized my pelvic floor and neck were constantly tight. No amount of deep tissue massage was alleviating my tension headaches. Adding vagus nerve resets into my routine helped me feel lighter, calmer, and more present—even in the chaos of two loud and energetic boys.
